R. V. Sterling's ID Model

  • Analyze – Determine whether instruction is necessary to close the performance gap.  If so, consider all aspects of the necessary instruction:  Examine the learners, their characteristics, their entry behaviors, the learning context, and the performance context.

  • Set Objectives – Establish the goal, the terminal objective, of the instruction.  Determine all the intermediate steps learners must master before they can achieve the terminal objective.

  • Assess – Based on the objectives, outline the items that will be used to assess whether learning has occurred.

  • Develop – Decide upon a method of delivery for the instruction.  Create the vehicle or media that will be used by learners to access the instructional content.

  • Implement – Establish the procedure for the employing the instructional product in the learning context.

  • Evaluate – Conduct formative and/or summative evaluations of the instructional product, consisting of determining the validity and reliability of the product.

  • Revise – Change aspects of the instructional product as needed to ensure that it is achieving the instructional objectives by closing the performance gap.
